Hi, I’m Ben, founder of Cinema At Home and a passionate home cinema designer. I hold the Institute of Acoustics Diploma in Acoustics and Noise Control, a qualification that allows me to ensure every cinema room we design not only looks incredible but sounds exceptional - with over two decades in AV design and installation, I combine technical expertise with creative design to deliver the ultimate cinema experience in your home.

New Demo Home Cinema Room Complete!

Our home cinema demo room is now complete, it features the latest in 4k projection with a Sim2 Domino projector. Sound is provided through an Anthem MRX1140 and Paradigm Pro speakers in an 5.2.4 configuration. Two Paradigm Defiance X12 subwoofers provide the low end. Kaleidescape movie system provides the highest bitrate, ultra 4k Dolby Atmos movies.

Sound Pressure Level (SPL)

Sound Pressure Level (SPL) is a measurement of sound intensity,

The lowest sound pressure which can be heard by humans is called the hearing threshold at 0dB.

The highest which can be endured before its painful is 130dB.

Humans perceive sound to be twice as loud when there is a 10dB difference. Every 10dB increase doubles how loud we perceive it. Every 10dB decrease means we perceive it to be half as loud.

We started off finishing the painting, then the mural wall was put up. We go into a little detail about mood lighting and play around with some fun scenes.

The starfield ceiling finally goes up (we’ve been waiting for the painting to finish).

Finally we fit acoustic seals and Batwings to the door.

Before we watch a movie we can prime ourselves and our audience to be more engaged and immersed in the atmosphere.

The result is a more engrossing, fun, experience. You can use mood lighting to tailor your room for different movie genres. Different lighting scenes for action, horror, sci-fi, romantic movies.

It’s week 7 of working on our home cinema demo room build. This week we finish out boxing the office/workshop space out. Fit the double oak doors, start framing out the main cinema ready for our acoustic fabric system and then start the painting.

Our Home Cinema Demo Room Build - Week 5

Work continues on our new home cinema demo room.

This week we trim out the rockwool which will help act as a Bass Trap within the room.

We paint the room matt black, our acoustic treatments arent aesthetic so we paint black and will later add acoustically transparent fabric walls.

We also unbox one of our Paradigm X12 Defiance Subs and take a look at the Isotek Power Conditioner we will have in our equipment rack.

(Torbay) Paignton Picture House is one of the most important historic cinemas in the UK and It’s just been given a £200,000 grant. It was opened on 16 March 1914 and is believed to be the oldest surviving cinema in Europe.
